Where to go
Ten of the best places to visit in Montenegro by car, with drive times from Podgorica - unlimited mileage means none of them cost you extra.
011hKotor Old Town & the Bay
A walled medieval town at the foot of the mountains, wrapped by a bay that reads more like a Norwegian fjord than the Adriatic. Park outside the old town walls and walk in - the drive along the bay itself, hugging the water the whole way, is half the reason to go.
1h from Podgorica
021h 10mPerast & Our Lady of the Rocks
A single baroque street between the mountains and the water, a few minutes past Kotor. Boats to the artificial islet of Our Lady of the Rocks leave from the small harbour - the whole detour costs under an hour.
1h 10m from Podgorica
031hBudva
The coast's main resort town: a compact old town, the busiest beaches in Montenegro, and a nightlife scene that picks up where Kotor's quiet stays behind. Good home base if you want the coast without driving somewhere new every day.
1h from Podgorica
041h 15mSveti Stefan
The islet-resort everyone's seen a photo of, connected to the mainland by a narrow sandbar. The island hotel itself is private, but the viewpoint above it and the public beach beside it are open, and worth the short stop on the way further down the coast.
1h 15m from Podgorica
051hLovćen National Park
A serpentine mountain road climbs out of Kotor into pine forest and karst, ending at Njegoš's mausoleum near the summit - 461 steps up to a panoramic view over the entire bay and, on a clear day, into Albania. Bring a jacket; it's noticeably cooler up top.
1h from Podgorica
0640mCetinje
Montenegro's old royal capital, tucked in a valley just past Lovćen. Former embassies line quiet streets around the National Museum and the Cetinje Monastery - a slower, inland counterpoint to the coast, and an easy add-on to a Lovćen day.
40m from Podgorica
071hOstrog Monastery
Built directly into a vertical cliff face above the Bjelopavlići plain, Ostrog is Montenegro's most important pilgrimage site and one of its most striking sights regardless of faith. The final approach road is narrow - take it slow and let oncoming traffic pass at the pull-outs.
1h from Podgorica
0845mLake Skadar National Park
The largest lake in Southern Europe, shared with Albania, ringed by wine villages, water-lily coves, and some of the best bird-watching in the Balkans. Virpazar makes a good stop for a boat trip out onto the water or a wine tasting at a lakeside vineyard.
45m from Podgorica
092h 30mDurmitor National Park & the Tara Canyon
The furthest entry on this list, and worth the drive: glacial lakes, jagged 2,000m+ peaks around Žabljak, and the Tara River Canyon - the deepest in Europe - crossed by the dramatic Đurđevića Tara Bridge. A full day out, or an overnight if you want to hike.
2h 30m from Podgorica
101h 30mUlcinj & Velika Plaža
Montenegro's southernmost coastal town, with a distinct Mediterranean, Ottoman-influenced old town and Velika Plaža - a 12km sweep of sandy beach that's a different texture entirely from the coast's usual pebble shoreline. Ada Bojana, a river-delta islet further south, is worth the extra 20 minutes.
